Meerut, Aug. 13 -- Two alleged cow slaughter suspects were injured and arrested in a late-night encounter with the Muzaffarnagar police, late on Tuesday night, while a third person was apprehended unhurt. Three others managed to escape into the surrounding jungle and remain at large, prompting a search operation. The encounter took place near Bamanhedi railway station, police officials said. A team from the Civil Lines police station acted on intelligence regarding alleged illegal slaughtering activities in the dense jungle area adjoining the Bamanhedi railway tracks. According to SP City Amrit Jain, the team moved into the area to intercept the suspected group. The suspects allegedly opened fire after noticing the police presence, following which the police returned fire. During the exchange, two suspects suffered bullet injuries. Police personnel subsequently overpowered and arrested both the injured men and a third suspect. The two injured suspects were taken to a local medical facility for treatment. The third arrested suspect was taken into custody for questioning as investigators began establishing the identities and alleged roles of those involved. Following the encounter, the area around the railway lines was cordoned off and additional police teams were deployed to locate the escaped suspects. The police are now conducting further investigation, while legal proceedings against the arrested suspects are underway.
