Two cousins drown in pit at illegal sand stockyard
PRAYAGRAJ, June 19 -- : Two cousins drowned in a pit at an alleged illegal sand storage site in Nevada village under the Sarai Akil police station area of Kaushambi on Thursday morning, officials said.
The victims were identified as Deepanshu (6), and Aditya (7). Both belonged to the families of labourers and were residents of Nevada village.
According to police, the boys had gone out to play with other children in the morning and wandered around 400 metres from their homes to an area where sand had allegedly been stockpiled illegally. A large pit, about 10 feet deep and filled with water, was at the site. The two children reportedly entered the pit and drowned.
Other children accompanying them alerted family members, who rushed to the spot along with villagers. After nearly an hour of efforts, the boys were pulled out and taken to a private hospital in Tilhapur, where doctors declared them dead.
The incident triggered grief and anger in the village. Residents alleged that the pit had been dug by operators involved in illegal sand storage and should have been filled to prevent accidents.
DSP (Chail) Abhishek Singh and Naib Tehsildar Saurabh Kumar visited the site after receiving information about the incident. Police sent the bodies for post-mortem examination.
