VARANASI, Sept. 1 -- Two children died of burn injuries after a fire broke out following a cooking gas cylinder leak at a house in Devdi village under Zamania Kotwali police station in Ghazipur district on Monday, police said. The incident occurred when the two boys hid on the upper floor of the house to escape the fire. The deceased were identified as Sundaram Yadav, 12, and Vishal Sharma, 14. According to police, both children were initially sitting in the courtyard of the house. They had gone to a neighbour's house to fetch milk. After getting the milk, the two returned, sat in the courtyard and chatted. Vishal's mother, Meena Devi, was cooking in the kitchen when gas suddenly began leaking from the cylinder. Flames erupted almost immediately. On seeing the fire, Meena Devi and Rekha ran outside. However, Sundaram and Vishal, who were in the courtyard, panicked and rushed into a nearby room. They then climbed to the rooftop to save themselves. When the fire reached the room, the fuel tank of a parked motorcycle exploded with a powerful blast. The explosion was so intense that a portion of the house was damaged and reduced to ruins. The two children, who were hiding on the upper floor, suffered severe burns and died on the spot. A team of officials, including Tehsildar Ram Narayan Verma, and police personnel reached the scene. Later, both bodies were taken into custody and sent for post-mortem examinations.
