Truck mows down cyclist, rams into e-rickshaw in Banda; 6 killed
LUCKNOW, May 28 -- Six people were killed and five others injured after a speeding sand-laden truck allegedly ran over a retired teacher and later rammed into an e-rickshaw in Uttar Pradesh's Banda district on Wednesday evening, police said.
The incident took place in the Bisanda police station area. Following the accident, angry villagers blocked the road and staged a protest, prompting deployment of heavy police force at the spot.
According to officials, the incident began around 5 pm when Rameshwar (61), a retired teacher and resident of Ghuri village, was returning home from the BRC office on a bicycle. A speeding truck coming from the Khurhand side allegedly hit and crushed him. Eyewitnesses said the truck wheel ran over his head, killing him on the spot.
Locals chased the truck after the accident. In an apparent bid to flee, the driver accelerated the vehicle. About two kilometres ahead on the Bisanda-Oran road, the truck went out of control and collided head-on with an oncoming e-rickshaw.
Five occupants of the e-rickshaw - Mamta (48), Rakesh (45), Shahbaz (12), Sohanlal (50) and Naveen (40), all residents of Korrahi village - died in the accident. Police said some victims died on the spot while others succumbed during treatment.
Among the injured are Sohanlal's wife Bauri (49), daughter Shivkali (17), Shabana (40) and her three-month-old daughter Safia. They were admitted to hospital with serious injuries.
After the collision, the truck overturned while the driver fled the scene....
