GORAKHPUR, Sept. 13 -- The 12th death anniversary of former Gorakshpeethadhishwar Mahant Avaidyanath was observed in Gorakhpur on Saturday. Mayor Manglesh Kumar Srivastava and municipal commissioner Ajay Jain paid floral tribute to his statue at the Nagar Nigam premises. Leaders and civic officials remembered Mahant Avaidyanath for his contributions to social harmony, the eradication of untouchability, nation-building and public welfare. Srivastava described the late seer as a symbol of Sanatan Dharma, social harmony and patriotism, saying that his entire life was dedicated to the welfare of society, eradication of untouchability and nation-building. "Mahant Avaidyanath's life will continue to inspire society. Along with religion and spirituality, he made significant contributions to education, healthcare and politics," the mayor said. Civic commissioner Ajay Jain said Mahant Avaidyanath was a prominent advocate of Hindutva, nationalism and social harmony and played a key role in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. "Mahant Avaidyanath made historic efforts to eliminate discrimination and untouchability. By visiting Dalit settlements and promoting the tradition of community feasts, he gave a new direction to social unity and harmony," Jain added.
