Lucknow, Aug. 7 -- Uttar Pradesh transport department on Wednesday launched a four-day statewide enforcement campaign, Mission Aarohi, booking 958 vehicles and impounding 227 on the first day for violations including operating without permits, overloading, tax default and misuse of private vehicles for commercial purposes. The special drive, being conducted from August 5 to 8 on the directions of transport commissioner Ashutosh Niranjan, is aimed at improving enforcement against road transport violations and increasing recovery of pending taxes and penalties. According to the transport department, enforcement teams carried out checks across the Kanpur, Jhansi, Banda, Agra and Lucknow divisions. Officials said the action is expected to generate nearly Rs.1 crore in revenue through taxes, penalties and fines. The department issued 520 challans and impounded 43 vehicles for operating without number plates. Another 113 overloaded vehicles were challaned, while 85 were seized. Officials also booked 69 vehicles for unauthorised passenger transport, impounding 21 of them. In addition, 55 private vehicles were found being used commercially, leading to 11 impoundments. Action was also taken against 142 vehicles for tax dues, with 48 vehicles seized. K.D. Singh Gaur, additional transport commissioner (Enforcement) and the nodal officer for the campaign, said the drive would continue till August 8 with a focus on violations of the Motor Vehicles Act, recovery of pending taxes, checking overloaded vehicles and curbing the commercial use of private vehicles.
