PRAYAGRAJ, June 2 -- A comprehensive traffic action and decongestion plan took effect on Monday in Sangam city to ease congestion in densely populated areas including parts of the old city. Under the plan, action will be initiated against schools, hospitals, shopping complexes, hotels, coaching centres and marriage halls that lack adequate parking facilities and contribute to traffic bottlenecks. The traffic department has begun identifying commercial establishments encroaching on public spaces for parking, as well as marriage halls where marriage processions often disrupt traffic flow. DCP (Traffic) Neeraj Pandey said multiple teams have been formed to map congestion points across the city linked to inadequate parking. "Once the list is prepared with photographic evidence, notices will be issued to the establishments, giving them a deadline to resolve the issue. Failure to comply may lead to sealing of the premises with support from the Prayagraj Development Authority," he said. Pandey added that the temporary ban on e-rickshaws, lifted earlier due to ongoing examinations, will soon be reinstated on select routes. The move follows directives issued last month by district magistrate Manish Kumar Verma for strict enforcement against traffic violations and illegal transport operations. He had ordered action against institutions without proper parking, along with checks on illegal taxi stands, unregistered vehicles and vehicles without number plates. He also directed strict enforcement against stunt driving and violations such as riding without helmets, not wearing seat belts and using mobile phones while driving. The administration plans to implement the decongestion drive in busy areas including Chowk, Clock Tower, Civil Lines and Lalla Chungi with support from transport unions, vendors and volunteers. Sixteen designated holding areas have also been identified for buses and trucks to prevent roadside parking. The plan includes demarcation of 'no e-rickshaw zones', 'no vehicle zones' and 'pedestrian-only zones' to ensure smooth movement. In addition, hospitals along highways will be geo-tagged and ambulances strategically positioned to improve emergency response, while cranes and ambulances will be deployed at intervals on national highways. According to officials, strict action will also be taken against damage to public infrastructure such as dividers and railings. The Municipal Corporation will also assist by shifting street vendors into designated zones and ensuring major intersections remain free of encroachments and illegal parking....
