PRAYAGRAJ/VARANASI, July 30 -- The month-long Kanwar Yatra begins on July 30, coinciding with the start of the holy month of Saawan. To facilitate the movement of thousands of Shiva devotees, district administrations in Prayagraj and Varanasi have implemented extensive traffic and security measures effective through August 28. The Prayagraj-Varanasi highway has been converted into a one-way corridor for pilgrims. One lane of the Jhunsi bridge is reserved exclusively for Kanwariyas transporting Ganga water; regular vehicular movement on this lane is prohibited. Four-wheelers traveling toward Jhunsi from Daraganj will be diverted via Phaphamau. Two-wheelers may use the remaining lane in both directions. Officials said four-wheelers traveling towards Jhunsi from the Daraganj side will be diverted via Phaphamau. Two-wheelers, however, will be allowed to use the remaining lane of the bridge in both directions to maintain local connectivity. DCP (Traffic) Neeraj Pandey said vehicular movement has been restricted on the left lane from GT Jawahar Alopibagh Chungi to the Bhiti border towards Varanasi, while the right lane has been kept open for regular traffic. He added that special diversions for the first Monday of Saawan will be enforced from 10 pm on August 1 to 10 pm on August 4 in view of the expected rush of pilgrims. State transport buses and heavy vehicles are barred from the Shastri Bridge. Between August 1 (10 pm) and August 4 (10 pm), heavy traffic from Kanpur, Lucknow and Kaushambi will be diverted via established alternate routes through Raebareli, Pratapgarh, Jaunpur, and Machhlishahr to avoid congestion. Varanasi commissioner of police Mohit Agarwal has divided the city into five zones and 15 sectors, with approximately 5,000 police personnel including five IPS and 50 gazetted officers deployed to maintain order. The 'Trinetra' system will monitor major routes and sensitive locations via CCTV. Dedicated control rooms are established at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple complex and the railway station to track crowd movement.
