Toxic gas kills two workers at Sambhal mill
MEERUT, June 26 -- At least two workers died after allegedly inhaling toxic gas inside a maize moisture-removal chamber at a rice mill in Sambhal early Thursday. One worker collapsed inside the chamber, while another died after attempting to rescue him.
The incident occurred around 2:30 am at a rice mill. The deceased were identified as Ompal, 32 and Vijay Pal, 42, of Moradabad district.
Police said Ompal, a labourer, entered the 15-20 feet deep chamber for maintenance work when he allegedly lost consciousness due to toxic gas. Vijay Pal, a foreman at the mill, climbed down to rescue him but was also overcome by the gas. Both died on the spot.
KK Bishnoi, SP, inspected the site and said preliminary findings pointed to toxic gas inside the chamber as the cause of the deaths. The bodies have been sent for postmortem examination. Police said further action will be taken after the investigation and receipt of the report. Vijay Pal is survived by a daughter and two sons, while Ompal was unmarried....
