LUCKNOW, Sept. 17 -- The 3rd KL Garg AITA Men's Tournament threw up a major upset in the singles quarterfinals on Wednesday as fifth seed Sunil of Haryana ousted top seed and fellow Haryana player Jatin 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, at the SDS Tennis Academy here. Sunil's victory, built on a mid-match surge and crucial service breaks, headlines a day of tightly contested matches that also saw Ricky of Delhi stage a gritty comeback and second seed Suraj of Karnataka reinforce his title credentials with a commanding win. Three of the four singles quarterfinals went the distance, with Ricky producing the day's most remarkable turnaround. Trailing Udit of Assam 2-6 in the opening set, the Delhi player clawed back to take a tie-break 7-6 (4) before sealing a 6-4 decider victory. Second seed Suraj of Karnataka made light work of sixth seed Aditya Mor of HJaryana, winning 7-5, 6-1 in a one-sided affair that underscored his favouritism for the title. West Bengal's Mayand completed the semi-final quartet with an emphatic 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 reversal of seventh seed Aditya Kumar of Punjab, storming back after dropping the opener to dominate proceedings. The doubles draw produced fewer surprises, though competitive scorelines suggested closer contests than the results indicated. Aditya Mor and Udit opened the doubles proceedings with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 win over Emon and Omesh, establishing early control and never relinquishing it. Sagar and Fardeen then edged Akhil and Devaharshit 6-4, 7-5, holding firm in a close second set to book their semifinal place.
