Tiger captured after 2 fatal attacks in Almora
Haldwani, May 13 -- Uttarakhand forest officers tranquilised and captured a tiger in Tadam village, Almora district, on Monday night, ending nearly one-and-a-half months of fear after the animal killed two villagers in separate attacks.
Forest officers said DNA samples from the captured tiger will be tested to confirm if it was responsible for the deaths.
On March 31, resident Khim Singh, 60, was attacked and killed by the tiger while collecting firewood in the forest. On May 3, Mahipal Singh, 55, another villager, died on the spot after an attack a short distance from his home while returning with fodder.
The incidents sparked panic and anger among residents, who demanded immediate action from the forest department. A joint team from the Almora forest division and Corbett National Park traced the animal.
Corbett Tiger Reserve senior veterinarian Dr Dushyant Sharma said, "The tiger was tranquilised late on Monday around 1.5 km inside the forest from the site of the most recent incident and was safely rescued."
Sharma said the captured animal is a male tiger, estimated at three years old and in good health. "The animal has been kept under observation. DNA samples of the tiger will be collected and sent for testing. Only after the results are available will it be confirmed whether this was the same tiger involved in the attacks or if another wild animal was responsible," he added.
Forest officials said the Almora forest division temporarily closed the Mohan Safari tourism zone as a precaution after the attacks and villager protests....
