Three young men drown in Jalaun dist
Kanpur, June 19 -- Three young men, including two teenagers, drowned in the Pahuj river in Jalaun district on Thursday after a group of friends went swimming to escape the heat, police said.
The victims were among 14 friends who had gathered near the river at Gopalpur village in Madhogarh police station limits. According to police, the group had gone to the riverbank for a picnic and a swim when three of them ventured into deeper water and failed to return.
The deceased were identified as Jagmohan Baghel, 19, Sumip Baghel, 17, both residents of Nidhora village in neighbouring Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh, and Avnibh Yadav, 20, a resident of Aniyantpura village.
Friends raised an alarm after seeing the three struggling in the water and attempted to rescue them, but were unsuccessful. Villagers and police personnel rushed to the spot after being informed of the incident.
A rescue operation involving local divers was launched, and the bodies were recovered from the river after nearly two hours of searching, police said.
The bodies have been sent for a post-mortem examination. Madhogarh police said further proceedings are underway.
