Three pyres in a day: Families bidfinal adieu to banker couple, sister
LUCKNOW, Aug. 22 -- In an unimaginable farewell, two grieving families on Friday performed the last rites of bank officer Manas Bajpai, his banker wife Divya Mishra and his sister Sheeba Bajpai, hours after their bodies were taken together for post-mortem examination at the King George's Medical University (KGMU).
Several banker colleagues of the deceased also arrived for the funeral. Divya's body was first taken home by her brother-in-law Bharat Yadav and maternal cousin Mayank Dixit at their Rajajipuram home. From there, relatives carried her to Baikunth Dham, where her father, Satish Chandra Mishra, lit her funeral pyre. Her cremation was the first of the three.
About one-and-a-half hours later, Manas and Sheeba's bodies were brought directly from KGMU to Baikunth Dham by their maternal uncle and cousins. Their cousin Piyush Shukla performed the last rites, with the siblings cremated together at the same crematorium.
For the families, the last rites brought an end to a devastating episode that began with the recovery of three bodies and ended with three funeral pyres. Relatives had to bid adieu to three members of the family within hours of one another, as grief enveloped the crematorium. "I'm not able to think of anything right now... it is next to impossible to believe that my sister is gone," said Pragya Mishra. "My father is a heart patient and it is unfortunate to see my parents watching this moment," she added.
"It's a devastating moment for us as we lost three members," said Prakhar Shukla, Manas's cousin, at Baikunth Dham.
The tragedy unfolded on Thursday after Manas allegedly shot Divya outside a bank before returning home, where he allegedly killed his sister Sheeba and later died by suicide....
