VARANASI, July 17 -- Three people were killed and two others critically injured when a speeding truck ran over them in Kudaran village, under the Ahraura police station area of Mirzapur district in eastern Uttar Pradesh in the wee hours of Thursday, police said. The victims were sleeping outside their house due to hot and humid weather in Kudaran village along the Varanasi-Shaktinagar highway when the truck, having lost control after a tyre burst, ran over them and crashed into the house, added a police officer. The deceased were identified as Rajaram Rajbhar, 42, his mother Sukhiya Devi, 75, and his relative Chandtara Devi, 55. All three died on the spot. Rajbhar's granddaughter Suhani Rajbhar, 12, and another person identified as Sunil Sharma, 37, sustained serious injuries. After the incident, locals and the police arrived at the scene. The police admitted the injured to Chunar Hospital. After administering first aid, doctors referred the injured to the trauma centre in Varanasi where they are undergoing treatment. Police sent the bodies for post-mortem examination, added the police officer. Enraged over the death of three people, the villagers blocked the Varanasi-Shaktinagar highway. While the police were attempting to pacify the villagers, an altercation broke out between a police officer and the locals. According to police, the villagers started pelting stones and vandalized a police vehicle, smashing its windows. As the situation escalated, additional police forces and the PAC were called in, added the police officer. The police resorted to cane-charge to bring the crowd under control. The situation was brought under control after about an hour, the blockade was lifted, and traffic resumed on the road. In this regard, circle officer (operations) Mohammad Faheem Quaraishi said a truck on the way to Sonbhadra from Varanasi lost control after a tyre burst and crashed into a house, killing three people and injuring two others. He said that after the incident, villagers and family members of the deceased blocked the Varanasi-Shaktinagar highway.
