GORAKHPUR, Aug. 3 -- Three children drowned while bathing in a pond near Chhath Ghat of Siswa Nagar Panchayat in Maharajganj district on Sunday afternoon. With the help of local residents, police recovered the bodies and took the children to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival. Station house officer (SHO) of Siswa police station, Akhilesh Verma said the deceased were identified as Rohan (13), Niteesh Yadav (12) and Krishna Maniyar (12). According to police, the three children had gone to the pond for a picnic on the weekly holiday when Krishna allegedly slipped into deep water. Rohan and Niteesh jumped in to rescue him, but they too drowned. Police and local residents immediately launched a rescue operation and recovered the bodies after nearly 30 minutes of searching. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and further legal proceedings are underway. Police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning....
