Three held for looting jewellery trader; one injured in encounter
PRAYAGRAJ, Oct. 9 -- Police arrested three men accused of robbing a jewellery trader in Kaushambi following an encounter during a routine vehicle check late Wednesday night.
One of the suspects, identified as Ritesh, sustained a gunshot wound to his leg during the exchange of fire. Police recovered the looted jewellery, cash, a motorcycle and illegal firearms from the trio. The other two suspects were identified as Sunil and Suraj, both residents of Khaga, Fatehpur. According to police, all three individuals confessed to the crime during questioning.
The robbery occurred on October 1. Suresh Chandra Soni, a jewellery trader from Mutthiganj who operates a shop in Kunda, Pratapgarh, was returning home when three men on a red motorcycle intercepted him about a kilometre from the Sihori toll plaza.
The assailants attacked Soni with a helmet and a rod. When he resisted, one of the men fired a warning shot into the air and held him at gunpoint. The robbers stole Rs.20,000 from his pocket and fled with a bag containing approximately one kilogram of silver and 20 grams of gold jewellery.
Upon reaching home, a distraught Soni alerted his family, who subsequently notified the police. The Kokhraj police registered a case against the then-unidentified men and launched an investigation, which included reviewing local CCTV footage.
Kaushambi superintendent of police (SP) Satya Narayan Prajapat inspected the crime scene and formed four teams to track the suspects. The breakthrough came late Wednesday night when Kokhraj police intercepted the men. In addition to the stolen goods, authorities recovered a country-made pistol, ammunition and a motorcycle allegedly used in the robbery....
