Tailor beaten to death on Kannauj street for refusing to give sweets
KANPUR, May 14 -- A tailor was beaten and strangled to death on a Kannauj street on Wednesday morning after he refused to give sweets to a man described by neighbours as mentally unstable, police said. The entire incident was captured on CCTV.
The victim, Nizamuddin, 40, a resident of Tajpur Naukhast, had cycled to Shekhana Mohalla at around 6.30am to share laddoos with a friend, Muntazir, to celebrate buying a plot of land the previous day. When Muntazir was not home, Nizamuddin began taking the sweets out of a bag hanging from his bicycle. At that moment, Waseeq Mulla, who was wandering the lane, demanded some. Nizamuddin refused. Waseeq Mulla then grabbed him, beat him with a slipper, dragged him roughly ten metres, and threw him to the ground. Neighbours who came out to investigate the commotion were shoved away. Mulla then pulled out his gamcha (a traditional cotton towel), wrapped it around Nizamuddin's neck, and dragged him out of the lane. Nizamuddin died before anyone could reach him. The accused fled before the police arrived. SP Kannauj, Vinod Kumar, who reached the spot with Sadar Kotwali police, said the CCTV footage clearly shows the accused attacking Nizamuddin and tightening the gamcha around his neck. "He is said to be mentally unstable and used to roam the mohalla. Initial investigation points to him as the killer. A case has been registered, and we are searching for him," the SP said.
Nizamuddin, who stitched clothes at a shop in nearby Kanshiram colony, had bought the plot approximately 907 square feet) of land behind the old police lines, for Rs four lakh on Tuesday. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
Neighbors told police that Waseeq Mulla had previously been jailed for the murder of his own brother and had been released only a fortnight ago....
