VARANASI, Sept. 14 -- Urban development and energy minister AK Sharma on Sunday directed officials to prepare a long-term action plan to strengthen Varanasi's drainage system and prevent recurring waterlogging. Expressing concern over incidents of drainage routes being obstructed, Sharma ordered strict action against those deliberately blocking water flow by dumping sacks of gravel or other materials. While chairing a review meeting with officials from the Varanasi Nagar Nigam, Jal Nigam and Energy Department on waterlogging, drainage, sanitation and power supply, Sharma directed officials to tackle the problem on a war footing. He ordered immediate follow-up wherever new drainage projects are required, with the aim of finding a permanent solution to waterlogging. He instructed officials to prepare a long-term action plan to strengthen the drainage system and prevent recurring waterlogging in the city. Directing officials to remain alert, he stressed regular monitoring of drainage routes and prompt removal of obstructions to ensure residents do not face waterlogging. He also directed officials to prioritise all public-interest works and ensure that residents face no inconvenience. The minister directed the energy department officials to ensure uninterrupted power supply, immediately repair damaged and sagging lines, and take necessary electrical safety measures. Earlier, Sharma inspected waterlogging-affected areas late on Saturday night and issued directions to officials to provide immediate relief. He also honoured sanitation workers for their dedication and contribution to public service.
