SUV crushes 22-year-old MBBS student to death in Gorakhpur, driver arrested
GORAKHPUR, March 6 -- A speeding SUV, driven under the influence of alcohol, crushed a 22-year-old third-year MBBS student of Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College on the Mohaddipur-Kauwa Bagh overbridge under the Shahpur police station limits in Gorakhpur on Wednesday at around 10pm, creating chaos in the area.
The uncontrolled SUV also hit two other vehicles, injuring two people who are currently undergoing treatment at BRD Medical College and are reported to be out of danger, police officials said.
Circle officer Gorakhnath, Ravi Kumar Singh, said the drunk driver of the SUV has been arrested after an FIR was registered against him under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The vehicle has also been seized.
The accused has been identified as Golden Sahni (30), a property dealer.
The deceased has been identified as Akash Pandey (22), a third-year MBBS student of BRD Medical College and the only son of Devendra Nath Pandey, who runs a tent house in his native town, Dharam Singhwa, in Sant Kabir Nagar district.
Police officials said the collision was so severe that Pandey's body was flung onto the railing of the overbridge, where it remained hanging for some time before being brought down.
According to officials, prima facie the vehicle was being driven recklessly on the wrong side of the road. The accused driver's alcohol test was found positive.
The SUV first hit a motorcycle and then rammed into other vehicles on the bridge from behind, injuring two commuters.
Officials said the MBBS student was returning from the residence of his friend Anup Kumar, who lives near MMM Engineering College, after attending a feast on the occasion of Holi when the tragic accident occurred.
Principal of BRD Medical College Dr RK Jaiswal said the incident triggered tension as fellow medical students and locals gathered at the mortuary of the medical college demanding strict action against the accused.
"The college has lost a promising student and a budding doctor. The entire medical college community is in deep grief over the demise of Akash Pandey," he said.
Police officials added that they are examining CCTV footage from the area to ascertain the exact sequence of events, while students and locals have demanded strict legal action against the accused....
