Rudrapur, March 3 -- Police arrested an alleged drug smuggler after a brief encounter in Rudrapur of Udham Singh Nagar district late on Sunday night, police said.
The accused, who had been absconding since February 1, after allegedly attacking a police team, sustained a bullet injury in his leg during the exchange of fire.
Udham Singh Nagar senior superintendent of police Ajay Ganpati said the accused was wanted in connection with an attack on a police team during a raid conducted on February 1 following a tip-off about smack smuggling.
"The man was wanted in an attack on police when a team raided his house on information about drug smuggling. He had been absconding since that day. On Sunday night, police received information about his location. When police tried to nab him, he fired at the police team. The police retaliated and he sustained an injury in his left leg," Ganpati said.
During the raid, the accused, identified as Nazeem, and his associates allegedly attacked the police team by pelting stones, injuring several personnel before fleeing from the spot.
An FIR was later registered against the accused.
Additional charges under section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Arms Act have been added....
