SUPREME court raps Centre over CCTV lapse
New Delhi, April 8 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday expressed its displeasure over Centre nominating an officer of the rank of under secretary to attend a high level meeting on the installation of CCTV in all police stations across the country. The bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said, "You (Centre) should know whom to send for a meeting when the Supreme Court has constituted a committee."
The top court then exempted Union home secretary Govind Mohan's personal presence at the next hearing after Attorney General R Venkataramani agreed to resolve the matter.
"Attorney General has stated that in two weeks he will ensure all issues are sorted out by holding regular meetings with the amicus curiae and all concerned officials," the bench said.
The Union home secretary also appeared in court in pursuance of the apex court's order asking him to remain present before it on Tuesday so that appropriate assistance might be drawn from him in implementation of the scheme for installation of CCTVs in police stations and central probe agencies as laid down in a 2021 judgment.
Attorney General R Venkataramani said, "I am taking stock of all the issues. The subject 'police' is a state issue. We will need a lot of coordination. At the same time, we do not want to transcend the federal limits." The SC was hearing a batch of pleas, including a suo motu case over the lack of functional CCTVs in police stations....
