Stranded Gangetic dolphin safely rescued
Lakhimpur Kheri, May 24 -- In a swift wildlife rescue operation on Saturday, south Kheri forest officials safely and successfully rescued a stranded Gangetic dolphin from the Sharda feeder canal and released it into the main river channel, where the water level is adequate.
The operation began after villagers spotted three dolphins stranded in the shallow waters, near the Ramahi bridge at the Sharda feeder canal on Friday.
Forest officials said while two of the three dolphins managed to return to the main Sharda river on their own, the third one was stranded in the shallow waters.
DFO, South Kheri, Tapas Mihir, told press personnel that low water levels and sudden changes in water flow often caused these water mammals to stray into narrow irrigation channels.
He added that a team of the forest officials regularly monitored the status of the stranded dolphin and on Saturday, successfully rescued it and released it to safety.
Remarkably, the rescue operation reminded one of the rescue of 10 stranded dolphins from the same canal, in the same month, in 2024.
As India's national aquatic animal, the Gangetic dolphin is protected under schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act....
