Stone-pelting during wedding procession in Mathura, 1 injured
AGRA, May 22 -- A 70-year-old woman was allegedly injured in a clash that broke out in Narhauli village of Mathura late on Wednesday night, following a stone-pelting incident after a wedding procession for two Dalit brothers entered an upper-caste locality, police said on Thursday.
The barat was of two brothers who were marrying two sisters from a Dalit family in the village headed by Bhagwan Dass aka Bulla, father of girls.
According to a complaint lodged by the groom's side, stones were hurled from rooftops when the procession entered the upper-caste locality, triggering the clash with some members of the wedding procession vandalising a sweet shop during the violence.
"The barat was heading for a marriage function when a shop was struck by a stone hurled by someone yet to be identified and this resulted in a dispute between the shopkeeper and those in the procession who vandalised the shop," said SSP (Mathura) Shlok Kumar.
The situation aggravated when the shop, owned by a member of another caste, was vandalised and his 70-year-old mother got injured during stone pelting.
However, those in the barat alleged that the portrait they were carrying was damaged in stone pelting and efforts were made to block the procession.
Subsequently, both groups pelted each other with stones. On information received, police from Highway police station reached the village and used mild force to restore peace in the area, he added.
A woman is stable but under medical surveillance, added the SSP. CCTV cameras installed in the area helped police identify those involved in the violence, and five people were taken into custody. The situation was brought under control, and the wedding ceremonies were completed amid heavy police deployment during the night, police said.
"Both groups forwarded their complaints and cases were being registered in the light of these. Besides, a case is being registered by police against those who engaged in stone pelting," said the SSP.
Police said the situation at one point turned tense as some cops who initially reached the spot were allegedly chased away after being attacked with sticks....
