LUCKNOW, Sept. 2 -- With the alleged conspirators behind the killing of Lucknow property dealer Dhirendra Pratap Singh still at large, the Special Task Force (STF) has stepped into the probe to trace the larger network allegedly linked to the land dispute in Bangarmau, Unnao, people familiar with the investigation said. The development assumes significance as cops are now looking beyond the immediate circumstances of Singh's abduction and murder to establish who was behind the alleged conspiracy and whether the killing was connected to the land dispute that he had repeatedly raised with authorities. HT earlier highlighted how Singh, who was associated with property dealings and also headed the Maharana Pratap Charitable Foundation, had written to the Uttar Pradesh government before his death, alleging that a land mafia was attempting to encroach upon government land in Bangarmau. He had also sought intervention in the dispute and action against those allegedly involved. Investigators are now examining the alleged land-mafia network and its links with people connected to the murder, sources said. "The STF is expected to examine the financial and property-related dealings surrounding the disputed land as part of efforts to establish a possible motive and identify the people who may have planned or facilitated the killing," said a senior police officer privy to the matter. "While some arrests have already been made in connection with the case, those suspected of being the main conspirators are yet to be arrested," the officer added. Their alleged role, as well as the motive behind Singh's killing, remains a key focus of the probe. The case has also brought renewed attention to Singh's earlier correspondence with the government. In his letter, a copy of which is with HT, Singh had raised concerns over alleged encroachment on government land and sought a time-bound inquiry. He had referred to a land dispute involving plots in Bangarmau and sought measurement and protection of the land. The letter assumes significance in the backdrop of his subsequent killing, with investigators now trying to determine whether the allegations made by Singh had any direct connection with the conspiracy against him. Officials involved in the investigation are also looking at the possible chain of command behind the killing from those who allegedly planned it to those who may have arranged logistics and executed the crime. With the STF now examining the wider network, investigators are expected to piece together the land dispute, Singh's allegations and the murder to establish whether the killing was the result of a larger property-related conspiracy....
