STF busts SIM-to-UPI racket, arrests four
LUCKNOW, July 11 -- Exposing a sophisticated cyber fraud module that allegedly misused the names of government welfare schemes, the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) has arrested four members of a gang accused of creating UPI identities using SIM cards activated in the names of unsuspecting people and routing transactions through online gaming platforms.
The arrests were made during a raid in Lakhimpur Kheri district following intelligence that the gang had been operating across the district and adjoining areas. Investigators believe the module was using a combination of forged digital identities, bank accounts and gaming applications to conceal the money trail and facilitate cyber fraud.
The STF seized 324 activated SIM cards, eight mobile phones, a biometric fingerprint scanner, six ATM cards of different banks, Aadhaar and PAN cards, a PhonePe identity card, two motorcycles and Rs.58,000 in cash from the accused.
According to investigators, the accused allegedly approached people by promising benefits under government welfare schemes or opportunities to earn quick money. After obtaining SIM cards in their names, the gang allegedly linked them to bank accounts, generated UPI IDs and used those digital identities to conduct transactions through various gaming applications, making it difficult to trace the actual operators.
The four arrested have been identified as Abhishek Verma, Neeraj Verma, Ravideep Kumar and Adesh Verma. During questioning, they allegedly admitted to being part of a larger organised network....
