STF busts interstate counterfeit medicine racket, two arrested
Dehradun, May 23 -- Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) has busted an interstate gang allegedly involved in manufacturing and selling counterfeit branded medicines through online platforms across multiple states, officials said on Friday.
The operation, named "Operation Fake Pill", was launched as part of the state government's "Drugs-Free Devbhoomi" campaign. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Ajai Singh, two accused were arrested during the crackdown for their alleged involvement in the illegal trade of fake life-saving medicines.
The accused have been identified as Jatin Saini, a resident of Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh, and Gaurav Tyagi, a resident of Dehradun originally from Meerut district.
Singh said the gang was allegedly manufacturing and circulating counterfeit medicines of several reputed pharmaceutical companies, including Sun Pharma, Mankind, Zydus, Glenmark, Torrent and Macleods. These fake medicines were being sold through online platforms and social media pages across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab and Uttarakhand.
He said a case has been registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station, Dehradun, under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, NDPS Act, Copyright Act and Information Technology Act.
Singh said said the gang operated through a Facebook page named "SK Health Care", where medicines resembling branded pharmaceutical products were advertised and sold at unusually low prices. The packaging and labels were allegedly forged to make the products appear genuine. He said the STF had been tracking the network for nearly two months before launching the operation.
