SSB personnel carry ailing woman amid migration of young villagers
Rudrapur, July 3 -- Personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) carried a 60-year-old ailing woman on a palanquin from a remote village in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district after residents, most of them elderly, were unable to find enough people to transport her to the nearest motorable road for medical treatment.
The incident took place on Wednesday in Jamtari village, around 35 km from the Pithoragarh district headquarters near the Indo-Nepal border, where the absence of road connectivity and large-scale migration of young residents left the village without sufficient manpower to carry the patient.
According to officials, Kalsa Devi fell ill and required immediate medical attention at the district hospital.
However, with no road leading to the village, her relatives had to arrange a palanquin to transport her. As most young villagers had migrated to the plains in search of livelihood, they sought assistance from the SSB.
Platoon Commander, 55th Battalion, SSB, Uttam Singh said: "We received information that an elderly woman needed to be taken to hospital but there were not enough people to carry the palanquin to the roadhead due to the lack of road connectivity.
Our personnel reached the village and carried her safely to the nearest motorable point, from where she was taken to hospital by taxi," Singh said.
Residents said several families have migrated from Jamtari because of poor road connectivity and inadequate facilities, leaving behind mostly elderly....
