GORAKHPUR, Aug. 9 -- Samajwadi Party (SP) workers wearing black bands marched in Gorakhpur on Saturday to protest alleged deterioration in law and order, crimes against children, and paper leaks, and submitted a memorandum to the district administration seeking action on the issues. The protesters gathered at Pant Park and marched towards the district magistrate's office, raising slogans against the state government. SP district president Brijesh Gautam alleged that incidents of murder, kidnapping and rape had increased in the district and claimed criminals were operating without fear of the law. "The incidents of kidnapping, murder and rape have become frequent in the district. The law-and-order situation has deteriorated and the government must take effective action against criminals," Gautam said in the memorandum. The protesters also raised concerns over the safety of women and common citizens and demanded stringent action against those involved in criminal activities. SP city unit president Shabbeer Quraishi said the party would continue raising public issues if corrective measures were not taken.
