AGRA, July 25 -- A protest by Samajwadi Party (SP) workers regarding the Jauhar University issue turned confrontational at the Collectorate premises in Aligarh on Friday, leading to a standoff with the local police. While SP activists accused the police of high-handedness, officials registered a case against the protesters for allegedly obstructing public servants from discharging their duties. According to deputy SP (III) Sarvam Singh, the incident occurred around 1:00 pm at the district headquarters, where a police contingent from the Civil Lines station was deployed to maintain law and order. "Some of the political party activists attempted to burn an effigy. The officer in-charge of the Civil Lines police station took necessary action but faced misbehaviour from the mob, who created hurdles for government officials in the line of duty," DSP Singh stated. He added that a case is being registered against several named and unidentified individuals at the Civil Lines police station. Conversely, the Samajwadi Party's city unit president, Abdul Hameed Ghosi, alleged that the police used excessive force. He claimed that the officer in-charge of the Civil Lines police station brandished his service revolver during the confrontation. "We were staging a peaceful protest in front of the Collectorate regarding the Jauhar University issue. The police force forcibly tried to remove our party workers, and officials misbehaved and engaged in a verbal duel with our youth activists before the officer in-charge drew his revolver," Ghosi alleged....
