Varanasi, June 5 -- Six police personnel, including the city Circle Officer (CO), were injured when a crowd allegedly pelted stones at police near Phullanpur crossing in Ghazipur on Thursday evening during the funeral procession of a slain criminal, police said. The deceased, Kamlesh Chaudhary alias Kamlesh Bind, who carried a bounty of Rs.1 lakh and was an accused in the Vineet Rai murder case, was killed in a police encounter on Wednesday. Following the post-mortem, his body was taken to his native village, Goda Dehati, under heavy security. Police said that while the body was being taken for cremation, villagers stopped the vehicle and staged a road blockade at Phullanpur crossing. When CO City Shekhar Sengar and other officers tried to persuade them to disperse, some members of the crowd allegedly turned violent and began pelting stones. CO Sengar, Kotwali SHO Pramod Singh, the CO's driver Shashikant Pandey and three other policemen sustained injuries. Additional forces from several police stations were rushed to the spot and order was restored after nearly 90 minutes.
