LUCKNOW, Aug. 10 -- The father of 2024-batch Jharkhand-cadre trainee IPS officer Mayank Bajpai has been taken into custody and named the prime accused in an FIR registered after armed men allegedly opened fire at a woman's house in Sitapur's Maholi area on Sunday, police said. Maholi circle officer Nagendra Chaubey said Vipin Bajpai was taken into custody along with eight others from the spot following the firing. He said the FIR was registered on the complaint of the woman and that further action would be taken based on the investigation and evidence. However, Chaubey said no role of Mayank Bajpai had emerged in the incident so far and that the officer was not present at the spot. According to reports, the incident occurred around 2 pm near the Adauri bypass turn under Maholi police station limits. The complainant, Shobhana Shukla, alleged that 24-25 armed men arrived in a DCM vehicle and opened fire at her house. She also alleged that the men abused her, tried to drag her outside and threatened to kill her. However, no injuries were reported in the incident. Police recovered two empty cartridges from the spot, while bullet marks were found on the walls of the house and solar panels installed on the premises. The firing is linked to a long-standing dispute over a piece of land along National Highway 30. Shukla said she and her husband had purchased around 19 biswa (8,265 sq ft) of land at Adauri bypass through a registered sale deed in 2018 for around Rs.1.5 crore. They subsequently built their house on part of the property and claimed possession of the remaining land. According to Shukla, Vipin Bajpai purchased land in the same area in 2022, after which a dispute arose between the two sides over ownership and possession. She alleged that the rival side had been attempting to take possession of the property despite a recent decision by the Maholi tehsil authorities in her favour. Shukla told police that she was alone at home when the group arrived, as her husband and children had gone to Deoria village. Inspector JB Pandey of Maholi police station said the woman had submitted a written complaint and an FIR had been registered. Police were investigating the allegations of firing, threats and an attempted forcible takeover of the property, he said.
