LUCKNOW, Aug. 7 -- In a rare life-saving procedure, doctors at SGPGIMS, Lucknow, successfully performed Uttar Pradesh's first simultaneous Caesarean section followed immediately by double heart valve replacement, saving a 26-year-old woman with severe heart disease and her newborn. The institute claimed it is only the fourth such case reported in India. The woman, pregnant with her first child, was referred to Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) at 32 weeks after developing severe breathlessness and palpitations, SGPGIMS said. Tests revealed advanced rheumatic heart disease with multiple valve complications, making childbirth a major risk. On July 21, specialists from obstetrics, cardiac surgery, cardiology, anaesthesiology and neonatology carried out a meticulously planned operation. Doctors first delivered a healthy 2.1-kg baby girl through a Caesarean section and, without delay, performed open-heart surgery to replace the mother's aortic and mitral valves. The mother was extubated within hours, required no blood transfusion during her ICU stay, and is recovering well along with her baby, according to SGPGIMS.
