LUCKNOW, Sept. 6 -- A 35-year-old man who arrived at the Apex Trauma Centre of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in severe haemorrhagic shock after being shot in the abdomen survived following emergency surgery, multiple blood transfusions and 48 hours of mechanical ventilation, doctors said on Saturday. Pankaj Kumar Yadav, a resident of Udvatkheda in Gosainganj, was allegedly shot by thieves at API Ansal around 12.30 am on August 14. He was brought to the trauma centre in critical condition, with the bullet causing severe internal bleeding. Doctors immediately resuscitated him and performed an emergency laparotomy. Surgery revealed around 1.5 litres of blood in his abdomen and severe damage to the ileum, part of the small intestine. Surgeons removed about 15 cm of the injured intestine and repaired the affected area. The patient required multiple blood transfusions and was kept on mechanical ventilation for 48 hours. He subsequently received intensive ICU care and monitoring before making a steady recovery and being discharged in stable condition. The surgery was performed by Professor Amit Kumar Singh, Additional Chief and Trauma Surgeon, along with senior residents Dr Aditya and Dr Varun Gupta. The anaesthesia team comprised Dr Ganpat Prasad and Dr Rafat Shamim, Additional Professors, and Dr Diksha, Senior Resident. OT and ICU teams also contributed to the treatment.
