LUCKNOW, May 23 -- Led by clerics, scores of members of the Shia community on Friday staged a protest against the ongoing parking construction and the proposed 'Lazeez Gali' project near Bada Imambada, alleging that the work was being carried out on land belonging to the Hussainabad and Allied Trust (HAT) without the community's consent. The controversy intensified after a representation submitted to the Archaeological Survey of India regarding alleged illegal construction activity in the heritage precinct surfaced during the protest. In its response, the ASI stated that the matter had been taken up with the Lucknow Development Authority and the district administration. However, protesters alleged that construction work was continuing despite the complaint. A large number of clerics, led by Maulana Kalbe Jawad, and community members marched from the mosque area through Rumi Darwaza to the under-construction parking site, raising slogans against the project in the heritage zone amid heavy police deployment. Addressing protesters, Jawad said the gathering was meant for inspection and consultation, adding that a larger community meeting would be held on Sunday to decide the next course of action.HTC...
