MEERUT, Aug. 29 -- The family of a 45-year-old woman who died on Thursday after a stampede-like situation at a Raksha Bandhan event in Bareilly has alleged that she may have survived had they been informed promptly after she was taken to the hospital. Madhu Singh, a resident of Satipur, attended the programme organised by Bareilly mayor Dr Umesh Gautam at Bareilly Club Ground with her sister-in-law Rekha alias Lata Singh. The event turned chaotic during saree bag distribution, with women reportedly falling over one another. Rekha said she and Madhu were caught in the rush and fell to the ground. While others pulled her up, several people passed over Madhu, she alleged. The family alleged that they were kept unaware for nearly two and a half hours after Madhu was taken to hospital. They later reached the mayor's Mission Hospital, where they learnt that she had died during treatment. "If we had been informed in time, we would have taken her to the hospital and ensured proper treatment. She would not have died," Rekha alleged. Madhu's nephew Raja Tomar, president of the BJP East Mandal, alleged that the family was made to move between the ICU and emergency department after reaching the hospital, without receiving clear information. He said the family eventually identified Madhu with the help of another woman and learnt that she had died. The situation became chaotic when saree bags were distributed from the stage, prompting women to rush for the gifts.
