SGPGIMS treats child with rare cholesterol disorder
LUCKNOW, Sept. 2 -- A three-year-old child with a rare and potentially fatal inherited cholesterol disorder has been successfully treated at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, through 20 weeks of serial therapeutic plasma exchange, offering an alternative treatment approach for a condition that can cause severe heart disease and premature death in childhood.
The child was suffering from Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (HoFH), an inherited disorder estimated to affect about one in five lakh people.
According to Dr Bharat Singh, associate professor, Department of Transfusion Medicine, the case is among the youngest reported in India to undergo serial plasma exchange for HoFH. The experience, he said, demonstrates the institute's capability to provide advanced therapeutic apheresis to children with rare and complex disorders. In HoFH, the body is unable to effectively remove harmful LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream, resulting in extraordinarily high cholesterol levels from birth.....
