LUCKNOW, Sept. 7 -- Advances in the diagnosis and surgical management of hyperparathyroidism were the focus of the 38th Foundation Day celebrations of the Department of Endocrine Surgery at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), which featured a one-day academic programme attended by leading endocrine surgeons, endocrinologists, faculty members, alumni and retired professors. The programme featured a Parathyroid Surgery Masterclass, where surgeons, faculty members and trainees discussed contemporary surgical techniques, challenging cases and recent advances in managing parathyroid disorders. The Foundation Day Oration was delivered by Padma Bhushan Dr Ambrish Mithal, a leading endocrinologist. In his lecture, "Four Decades of Evolution in the Manifestations and Management of Hyperparathyroidism," he traced the evolution of the clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of hyperparathyroidism over the past four decades. The event was attended by SGPGIMS Director Padmashree Professor Radha Krishna Dhiman, the chief guest, along with senior and retired faculty members whose contributions were instrumental in establishing and developing the Department of Endocrine Surgery. Experts participating in the programme included Dr Kaustubh Patel, president of the Indian Society of Thyroid Surgeons, besides Dr Deepak Sreen, Dr Saurabh Arora and Dr P Arun. Faculty members and alumni from different parts of India and abroad also participated. The masterclass focused on contemporary approaches to parathyroid surgery, including advances in diagnosis, surgical decision-making, operative techniques and management of complex cases. The sessions also provided young surgeons and trainees an opportunity to interact with experienced specialists.
