Lucknow, Sept. 3 -- The UP government has approved an action plan to conduct a special Teacher Eligibility Test (Special TET) for teachers working in basic education schools and special teachers handling Children With Special Needs (CWSN), following directions of the Supreme Court. According to a letter issued by Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma, ACS (basic and secondary education department) to secretary, UP Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) on Wednesday, the Special TET will be held for teachers working at the primary and upper-primary levels. The move follows the Supreme Court's May 29, 2026 order requiring all serving teachers to clear the prescribed teacher eligibility test by August 31, 2028. The government has also decided to conduct the special examination for around 2,500 special teachers/assistant teachers (CWSN) at the primary and upper-primary levels. The examination will be open to eligible teachers working in schools run by the UP Basic Education Council, recognised schools run by local bodies, state-aided schools and special education institutions. For CWSN teachers, the order specifies additional requirements including recognition/registration with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) and the prescribed special education qualifications.
