SDO arrested for 'offering' ANM Rs.5L to steal newborn
KANPUR, Aug. 12 -- An electricity department sub-divisional officer (SDO) was arrested for allegedly offering an auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) Rs.5 lakh to steal a newborn from a community health centre (CHC) in Ghatampur, police said. The officer, who has two daughters, allegedly wanted a son.
The alleged plot was uncovered on May 11 when the ANM, Geeta, allegedly stole a newborn from the Ghatampur CHC and was caught by staff while attempting to leave with the baby. She was arrested and sent to jail after being booked in a case related to human trafficking and kidnapping.
According to police, the subsequent investigation and questioning of Geeta led them to RK Verma, an SDO posted at a power substation in Maudaha, Hamirpur, for around six months and a native of Sukhapur village in the Ghatampur police station area. Verma, who has two daughters, allegedly offered Geeta Rs.5 lakh to steal a child from the CHC. Investigators subsequently registered a case against him and began looking for him.
On Tuesday, Verma was arrested and produced before a court, which sent him to judicial custody. Ghatampur ACP Krishna Kant said Verma admitted during questioning that he had asked Geeta to steal a child in return for Rs.5 lakh because he wanted a son. Police said the investigation was continuing.....
