SCPCR seeks probe into Doon 'trafficking racket'
Dehradun, May 16 -- The Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has taken cognisance of alleged operation of a prostitution racket from the premises of a play school in Dehradun, officials said.
The commission has written to the Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal, asking for an impartial, comprehensive and time-bound investigation into the matter and strict legal action against those found responsible.
It came days after Dehradun police on Wednesday busted the prostitution racket operating at the play school in the Cantt area and arrested two accused, including the alleged ringleader, while rescuing three women during a raid.
The commission also directed authorities to initiate action against concerned officials and the institute's management if any administrative or institutional negligence is found during the probe, officials added.
Commission chairperson Dr Geeta Khanna said the incident was "deeply shameful and condemnable" and raised serious concerns over the safety of children, the education system and social values.
"The use of sensitive spaces such as schools for illegal activities cannot be accepted under any circumstances," Khanna said.
Dehradun senior superintendent of police (SSP) Pramendra Dobhal said the action was taken after police received confidential intelligence inputs about trafficking activities in the area. A joint team of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) and Cantt police, under the supervision of the circle officer (City), conducted a surprise raid at Kishan Nagar Extension on May 13.
During the raid, police found three women and a man in a compromising situation behind the school building. The team arrested two accused, identified as Ashish Kumar Pandey (42), a resident of Jaipur in Rajasthan, and Jang Bahadur (50), also from Jaipur, while rescuing three women from the spot.
The SSP said Pandey was allegedly running the racket and had previously served jail time in a similar case.
During interrogation, he revealed that he lured women from other states to Dehradun on the pretext of providing jobs and later forced them into prostitution, he said.
Police also seized incriminating materials and a car from the spot. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act at Kotwali Cantt police station, and further investigation is underway, SSP said....
