New Delhi, July 21 -- The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the conviction and life sentence of a biscuit baron's scion for the murder of his wife in 2014 in Uttar Pradesh, bringing the curtains down on a high-profile murder case. An extramarital affair of the husband with his neighbour - the daughter of a leading gutka manufacturer - was held to be the motive. The court sentenced the husband, Piyush Shyamdasini, and two others but acquitted his girlfriend Manisha Makhija for lack of evidence. The incident involved the death of Jyoti Shyamdasini, who was found dead in her husband's car in Kanpur in July 2014. Piyush had claimed the car was waylaid by a group including the co-accused. The bench of justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma upheld the concurrent verdict of guilt by the trial court as well as the high court. "It is highly unnatural, and even abhorrent, to believe that a husband who is put in a situation like the present one, would come out untouched and without a sign of protest," it noted....
