New Delhi, Aug. 22 -- The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Centre and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to file a response by Monday regarding a permanent mechanism to fix On-Screen Marking (OSM) evaluation glitches in Class 12 board exams, while proposing a temporary reopening of the revaluation window for affected students. In June, the central government had constituted a one-member inquiry committee to examine concerns regarding the procurement and rollout of CBSE's OSM for Class 12. Solicitor general Tushar Mehta, who appeared for the Centre, informed the court that a one-week window was provided for the aggrieved students to apply for revaluation, and 168,000 had benefitted from the process. A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana said there should be a permanent mechanism. "Earlier, you stated that there are teething problems and a one-member commission is looking into these aspects." Mehta then informed the court: "We have prepared a note. But I feel it should be placed before the court in an affidavit. There is something in my mind which I need to discuss with the government. The matter may be taken up on Monday." The court was hearing a petition filed in public interest by advocate Rakesh Binjola, who raised concerns over the OSM evaluation. The petitioner, represented by advocate Lakshmikant Shukla, said, "The figure of 168,000 they suggest is very less. The career of lakhs of students is at stake. Nearly three lakh (300,000) students appeared in compartment exams. The government must consider extending the window for revaluation as many students were caught unaware." The bench then told Mehta, "Can the window be reopened for a week? You must look into this matter." Mehta said that it may not be possible. "That may not be possible. They have missed the deadline and nothing can be done." The matter has been posted for Tuesday....
