LUCKNOW, Aug. 24 -- Members of the Savarna Morcha, an upper-caste socio-political organisation, staged a protest in Lucknow on Sunday against reservation, the UGC and the SC/ST Act, taking out a symbolic "funeral procession" of politicians whom they accused of remaining silent on issues concerning the community. The procession began at 1090 Chauraha in Gomti Nagar and was scheduled to end at Baikunth Dham. Police briefly stopped the protesters and took them to Ambedkar Park, where they were kept for around 30 minutes. The procession resumed after the police convoy passed. Savarna Morcha national spokesperson Abhinav Nath Tripathi said the protest was aimed at mobilising members of the community against what he termed the "silence" of elected representatives on issues affecting them. "Those who claim to represent the upper-caste community cannot remain silent on issues such as the UGC and reservation policies. We want to awaken the community so that it can question these leaders and the government," Tripathi said.
