MEERUT, Sept. 9 -- Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rehman Barq has objected to a complaint alleging that the Baba Bahauddin Shah Mosque near the Chaudhary Sarai police outpost in Sambhal is an unauthorised religious structure. The district administration has initiated an inquiry into the allegations. Sambhal SDM Vikas Chandra is conductqing the inquiry following a complaint submitted to district magistrate Ankit Khandelwal on August 31 by Subhash Chandra Tyagi, national convenor of Shri Kalki Sena. The complaint alleges that the mosque, recorded under the name Jama Masjid, was illegally expanded over the past 10 to 15 years. Barq rejected the allegations and said they were incorrect. He also alleged that mosques, madrasas and graveyards were being repeatedly targeted in Sambhal and elsewhere in Uttar Pradesh. Muslim religious representatives said the Baba Bahauddin Shah Mosque has no connection with Sambhal's Shahi Jama Masjid. Maulana Faizan Ashraf Hamidi said the mosque was more than 350 years old and had its own historical and religious significance.
