MEERUT, June 16 -- The Sambhal Police have arrested a man for allegedly shooting his 20-year-old sister dead after she insisted on marrying her maternal cousin, a relationship he reportedly opposed. Following his arrest on Sunday evening, the accused was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody on Monday, police said. The incident took place in Senjna village under the Gunnour Kotwali police station area of Sambhal district. The victim, Muskan, 20, daughter of the late Safi Mohammad, was allegedly shot dead by her brother, Sunny Mohammad, following a prolonged family dispute over her relationship and marriage plans. According to superintendent of police Krishna Kumar Bishnoi, Muskan had been in a long-standing relationship with her maternal cousin, Hasmat, son of Liyakat and a resident of Rora Markpur village in the Rajpura police station area. She reportedly wanted to marry him. Investigators said tensions within the family had intensified in the days leading up to the incident. According to police, Muskan and Sunny allegedly had heated arguments on June 11 and June 12 over her insistence on marrying her maternal cousin despite his objections. Muskan's father passed away around 15 years ago. According to police, their mother Parveen left for agricultural work at around 7 am on Friday. When she returned home at around 11 am, she found Muskan lying on a cot in a pool of blood. Sunny was missing from the house when the body was discovered. The incident was reported to the police later that day by village head Akhtar at around 4 pm. Police teams rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. During the probe, officers allegedly found evidence indicating Sunny Mohammad's involvement in the murder. He was subsequently arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
