MEERUT, July 26 -- A 10-member delegation of Samajwadi Party (SP) MPs on Saturday met Rampur district magistrate Ajay Kumar Dwivedi and sought the withdrawal of demolition notices issued for 38 buildings on the university campus. The delegation, including MPs Iqra Hasan, Ruchi Veera, Zia Ur Rehman Barq, Harendra Malik, Javed Ali Khan, Mohibbullah, Neeraj Maurya, Ramji Lal Suman, Rajeev Rai and Birendra Singh Malik, termed the demolition order unjust and warned that party would explore all legal and political options to safeguard the university founded by senior SP leader Azam Khan. The MPs visited Jauhar University, where they met students who have been on an indefinite sit-in at the main gate for the past eight days against the demolition order. Addressing the students, Kairana MP Iqra Hasan said the party was committed to protecting Jauhar University and would oppose any move to demolish it. She said SP leaders had already met the district magistrate and vowed to fight the matter through all legal and political means, adding that the party would stand firmly to safeguard the institution. Moradabad MP Ruchi Veera termed Jauhar University a "temple of education" and called the demolition order unjustified. She said the party would challenge the move before higher authorities and, if needed, in court. Sambhal MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq accused the Rampur administration of issuing an arbitrary order and said the matter would be raised in Parliament. "The demolition order is wrong and should be withdrawn. My name has already been listed for raising the issue during Zero Hour, but Parliament has not been functioning. Whenever proceedings resume, I will definitely raise this issue," Barq said. Sambhal MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq termed the demolition order arbitrary, stating, the issue will be raised in Parliament once proceedings resume, adding that he had already sought to take it up during Zero Hour. Muzaffarnagar MP Harendra Malik alleged that the government was pursuing an anti-education agenda. "Instead of establishing new universities, this government is focused on demolishing existing ones," he said. Rajya Sabha MP Javed Ali Khan also criticized the government, calling it anti-education and anti-people. "It is futile to expect justice from a government that does not want poor children to receive education. It is our responsibility to ensure that the illegal demolition order issued by the DM is withdrawn," he said. Security was tightened across Rampur during the visit, with heavy police deployment from the district collectorate to Jauhar University's main gate. Additional superintendent of police Anurag Singh said personnel from three police stations, along with one Circle Officer each, had been deployed, while riot-control vehicles and a fire tender were kept on standby as a precaution. The delegation also included Rampur SP district president Ajay Sagar and former MP as well as Maharashtra SP president Abu Asim Azmi. They also visited Azam Khan's wife, Dr Tanjeen Fatima, at their family residence....
