LUCKNOW, Sept. 8 -- Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai staged a sit-in outside the party office on Monday after he was reportedly stopped by the police from visiting Saharanpur, where he planned to meet members of a mosque committee, days after demolition of a mosque at the Saharanpur collectorate. "The state government is a complete failure in meeting public aspirations and is, therefore, acting out of fear. Whenever Congress leaders and workers set out to raise a voices, they are intercepted along the way-an action that runs counter to democracy and the Constitution," Rai said. A Congress delegation was heading to Saharanpur and Ajay Rai was scheduled to join them, but the government prevented the visit, said a press statement issued by the party in Lucknow. As Rai came out of the party office on Mall Avenue, police stopped him, prompting Rai to stage a sit-in outside the party office with his supporters. "The BJP can stop me but not suppress the voice the Congress party raises for the poor and victims. No matter how much pressure the government imposes upon us, we will not bow to any pressure and continue our struggle for the victims," Rai said.
