PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 25 -- Poor and deprived families belonging to the marginalised Kol and Dharkar communities in Prayagraj's rural areas are set to get pucca houses in a residential colony being developed on the lines of urban settlements in Mungari village of Karachhana. Spread over four bighas of land, the colony will have 60 houses under the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana. The administration has identified the land for the project and 43 beneficiaries have been selected so far. Construction will begin after land leases are executed in favour of the beneficiaries, district officials said. Unlike conventional rural housing projects, the colony will have basic civic amenities, including roads, drinking water supply, drainage, solar-powered streetlights, a park and an open gym, they added. Bhupendra Singh, project director of the district rural development agency, said the site had been identified and the process of allotting land to the selected beneficiaries would be taken up before construction begins. District development officer GP Kushwaha said each beneficiary would be allotted a 20x50-foot plot to construct a house. Each family will receive financial assistance of Rs.1.20 lakh in three instalments - Rs.40,000 in the first, Rs.70,000 in the second and Rs.10,000 in the third. Eligible beneficiaries will also receive Rs.27,000 as wages for 90 days of work under the VB-G RAM G-(Viksit Bharat- Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin)- scheme, at the rate of Rs.300 per day. For families living in makeshift shelters and struggling to make ends meet, the proposed colony offers the prospect of a permanent home, officials said. Bhola Dharkar, 42, a Mungari resident who makes bamboo baskets and other items to support his family, said he had never imagined owning a pucca house. His family currently lives under a polythene-sheet roof. Raghuraj Kol, 38, who works breaking stones at a quarry, said he takes up house-painting and masonry work to sustain his family when quarry work is unavailable.
