Haldwani, Sept. 3 -- A senior administrative office at the regional transport office (RTO) in Haldwani is allegedly absconding after opening fire with a licensed gun after an altercation with a colleague on office premises on Tuesday, police said on Wednesday, adding that an FIR was registered against him. The accused official was identified as Mahendra Singh Negi. No employee was injured, police said. The FIR was registered after CCTV footage confirmed that a firearm was used. SP City Manoj Katyal said Negi and a colleague had an altercation, after which he left the office only to return with his licensed pistol at around 4 pm. "Negi allegedly brandished the weapon and fired a shot after returning to the RTO office," Katyal said. The bullet struck a cupboard before becoming lodged among files kept inside it. After police examined the CCTV footage, sub-inspector Deepa Joshi of the RTO police outspost submitted a complaint, leading to registration of the FIR on Wednesday. Police have also been examining Negi's movements after the firing. Investigators said he switched off his mobile phone while he was still inside the RTO premises, with his last recorded location being the office. According to police, Negi did not return home after the incident. He lives in Gayatri Vihar in Kusumkheda, Mukhani, while he is originally from Devariya in Kichha, Udham Singh Nagar district. A team has been formed to trace and arrest Negi. Investigators said they were examining the circumstances that preceded the firing and the events surrounding the altercation with his colleague. "Police are also looking into how the licensed firearm was brought into the office and whether any departmental rules or other legal provisions were violated. Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation," Katyal said....
