New Delhi, Aug. 7 -- The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved a Rs.23,731 crore national scheme to accelerate domestic Compressed Biogas (CBG) production, strengthen energy security and promote rural livelihoods by converting organic waste into clean fuel. The GOBARdhan (Galvanising Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan) scheme - the national circular bioenergy scheme - will be implemented from the financial year FY27 to FY36, the government said in a release. Administered by the ministry of petroleum and natural gas, it seeks to convert agricultural residue, cattle dung, sugar industry waste, municipal organic waste and other biomass into compressed biogas and organic manure to enhance rural income. The Centre said the scheme is expected to increase domestic CBG production nearly ten-fold, attract large private investment and reduce India's dependence on imported fossil fuels. Suresh NS, senior research scientist with Strategic Initiatives Group at CSTEP said, "The scheme will be a major boost for compressed biogas production and can help strengthen India's energy security. The scheme can turn rural and urban organic waste into useful resources and produce methane for cleaner transport and cooking, while also improving waste management." Compressed biogas is purified biogas produced from organic waste. After purification, it is chemically similar to natural gas and can be supplied through existing gas pipelines or used as transport fuel in CNG vehicles.
